    By Roy Campbell

U.S. Congresswoman  Frederica Wilson will receive the Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award at the Broward Black Elected Officials’ Eighth Annual Black History Gala, which will be held 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood.

“The 2013 Gala: “Hold Fast To Dreams,” is presented by the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Platinum sponsors are Comcast and Amscot Financial. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau is a Silver sponsor. Partner sponsors include Waste Management, VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, FPL and Charter Schools of Excellence.

Tickets are $150 and include dinner and special performances. For reservations, call the BBEO Gala Hotline at (954) 969-6200.

The annual BBEO gala recognizes a prestigious list of individuals and corporations for their community service in the categories of political, community and corporate.

Wilson, whose political journey has taken her from the Miami-Dade School Board to both state houses to Congress, will be recognized for her lifetime of community service, particularly her devotion to education as exemplified by her 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project. The Miami-Dade schools program, which mentors Black male youths, is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Broward County Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness and West Park Vice-Mayor Felicia M. Brunson are the honorees in the political category. A special award will be presented to Broward Vice-Mayor Sharief, who is CEO and President and founder of South Florida Pediatric Homecare.

This year’s community awards will be given to couples who work together to better South Florida. The recipients are Westside Gazette Publisher Bobby Henry and his wife, Broward County Administrator Bertha Henry and Lauderdale Lakes Commissioner Levoyd Williams and his wife, Beverly, a civic leader.

The corporate honorees are Comcast and Amscot Financial.

The Broward Black Elected Officials are a 501©3 organization that supports education through scholarship awards, direct grants to the UNCF and historically Black colleges. The organization also presents community outreach programs.

The gala has been helmed since 2007 by producer Roy H. Campbell, who has created mega-events with such international celebrities as Oprah Winfrey, Tyra Banks, Patti LaBelle and Will Smith.
