FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Broward House, South Florida’s oldest and largest HIV/AIDS community service organization, recognized the accomplishments of Broward Health Community Health Services (BHCHS) Vice President Jasmin Shirley at its recent Broward House Red Ribbon Awards.  Shirley was one of five honorees recognized for having gone above and beyond to help those in South Florida living with HIV/AIDS.

“I am truly humbled by the recognition and thankful for the opportunity and support provided by Broward House to improve the health and wellness of our community,” said Shirley.

Shirley is a renowned international advocate on HIV/AIDS education and treatment, and has more than 25 years of experience in health care administration.  In August 2010, the Broward County Commission appointed Shirley to the Broward Regional Health Planning Council (BRHPC), with a term lasting through June 15, 2012. Her first appointment to the BRHPC was in 2004, where she served a two-year term.

In 1990, Shirley successfully challenged the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Ga., in a dispute regarding the numbers of reported cases of AIDS and HIV in Broward County.

As a result, Broward County qualified for federal funding and continues to receive more than $136 million annually from the Ryan White C.A.R.E. Act to provide treatment and support services to uninsured individuals. Shirley was also instrumental in developing the first service network of health care and community organizations to address HIV/AIDS is-sues in Broward County in 1985.

In addition, Shirley has held numerous leadership positions with health-related committees and boards, such as: Sunshine Health Center Board of  Directors, South Florida AIDS Network-Broward, HIV/AIDS Services Planning Council, Florida Community Prevention Planning Group, National Association of Health Service Executives, NAACP Executive Committee, Broward Regional Health Planning Council Health Planning Committee, Primary Care Oversight, Delta Sigma Theta Adolescent Health Program, Planning and Development and Reaching Adolescent Parents Committees and Broward Community Planning Partnership.

“I would like to congratulate Jasmin Shirley on receiving Broward House’s Red Ribbon Award. It is well-deserved,” said Claudette Grant, site administrator of Broward Health Comprehensive Care Center.
