PEMBROKE PINES, FL — Residents of Broward County, Fla. answered a call from U.S. leaders and the United Nations to help address the world’s biggest problems; they are committed to the new 17 “Global Goals.” These Sustainable Development Goals (SGAs) are a roadmap to achieve three extraordinary things in the next 15 years: end extreme poverty; fight inequality and injustice; and fix climate change (https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org).

In keeping with the international recognition of this UN Day (Oct. 24), Broward cities are asked to light their buildings in a wash of blue lights on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 24, or throughout that weekend. On Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015, the Broward County Chapter of the United Nations Association of The United States of America (UNA-USA) will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Charter Signing of the United Nations, and the new Global Goals, with the theme: “Strong UN. Better World” at the Broward UNA-USA’s annual Scholarship and Awards Luncheon at 2 to 6 p.m. at Inverrary Country Club, 3840 Inverrary Blvd., Lauderhill, Fla. All are invited to enjoy enlightenment, dining and entertainment. Donation: $40 per person with business attire or national dress ($30 for children under 13). For tickets and information: Broward County Chapter UNA-USA, P.O. Box 825602, Pembroke Pines, FL 33082-5602, or (954) 290-8047, www.broward-una.org.

Broward UNA Chapter President, Dr. Eileen Davis-Jerome, reminds us: “The United Nations Association wants all Americans to understand the vital work of the United Nations. Membership to UNA-USA is your connection to the UN. New members, college interns and non-profit organization collaborations are always welcomed.”

The keynote speaker, this year, for Broward UN Day will be Anna Blue, Deputy Director for “GirlUp” (the United Nations Foundation program, helping the hardest to reach girls living in places where it is hardest to be a girl).

Local luncheon honorees will include: Rev. Dr. Anthony B. Holder (Holy Sacrament Episcopal Church, Mission Work), Nora Rupert (District 7 BCPS School Board Member), Patricia Good (District 2 BCPS School Board Member), Mark Gruskin (American Heritage School, Model UN Advisor and Teacher), Nicky Nieves (Volunteer), Kerry-Ann Royes (former YMCA CAC Broward County Executive Director), and Calvin Hughes (Local 10 News, Media and Community Volunteer). The luncheon chair is Marie Berlin and public relations chair is Gloria Bo
