Caring for Kin

By Joy Oglesby

This month, Broward Health will honor two women who found themselves unexpectantly caring for kin following personal tragedies.

Sherri Lewis, who is married and never had children, became a “mother” at the age of 53 following the death of her sister last August. Sherri now cares for her 15-year-old niece, who previously lived out of state.

When Mirna Lopez’s daughter was killed in a murder-suicide in June, the Lauderhill woman became the caregiver to her infant granddaughter.

Broward Health Community Health Services’ staff are impressed with the commitment Mirna and Sherri have shown to caring for their relatives despite their own challenges. September is also Kinship Family Awareness Month.

We also have available a Broward Health exec who has taken in a relative of her own and can talk about the Kinship program. For visuals, I can send family photos. Sherri is available by phone or Zoom. She will also be at our clinic this Saturday for a food distribution.
