As the political landscape shifts in anticipation of the 2024 presidential election, one figure remains at the forefront of public discourse: Donald Trump. His recent hesitance to engage in debates, with Vice President Kamala Harris, raises eyebrows and provokes discussion about his overall commitment to democratic values. This avoidance—especially against a fierce and articulate political rival and a Black woman—sends a message that transcends mere personal preference; it reflects a wider strategy rooted in fear of accountability, the desire to dictate the narrative and a public humiliation by the intelligence of a Black woman.

Representing the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), the Black Press of America, it was an honor to attend my first Democratic National Committee (DNC) Convention, an experience that will be forever etched in my memory.        Chaos! The Republican Party policies related to gun safety and access almost got their nominee killed – yet they pulled out their old gaslighting play book and found a way to blame Joe Biden knowing full well the perpetrator was a republican. It was the Republican nominee and his surrogates’ aggressive rhetoric that infused vitriol into our politics lighting. the match that fuels mental instability. Joe Biden could have piled on with negativity; instead he called to make sure he was alright. quickly denounced the act that nearly took the man’s life and asked the same from the country. Those acts of kindness and humanity were repaid with name calling and ugly politics.        No one is above the law. Except, it seems, for presidents like Donald Trump. In a landmark decision on Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority granted former President Trump broad immunity from prosecution for certain official acts, while denying it for private acts. This 6-3 ruling, with the court’s liberal justices dissenting, basically alters the balance of power and accountability in American authority.

As the United States stands on the edge of a precipice, staring down the barrel of potential civil strife, it is crucial to reflect on the state of our democracy and the peril it faces. At the center of this storm is a former president who has been convicted of 34 felonies, charged with sexual abuse and defamation of writer E. Jean Carroll and alleged to have incited an insurrection. His actions have sown division and fear, conspiring with our adversaries and seeking to disenfranchise Black and Brown communities. The sheer audacity of this man, who, instead of seeking forgiveness, continues to spread lies and propaganda, even in sacred spaces like Black churches, is an affront to the very essence of our nation’s values.
