With all the talk about the Coronavirus COVID-19, experts and people alike are trying to figure out which groups are more susceptible to the disease: the elderly? People of Asian descent? African Americans? And one group that is particularly getting a lot of attention is pregnant women. If you are pregnant and are surrounded by the coronavirus, should you be worried?

     People LOVE to say, “Oh she is living with HIV.” Correction: HIV is living with me. If I were living with HIV, I would live my life by HIV’s terms — and I simply cannot do that. I am a Taurus, a bull, so I am stubborn. I am no different when it comes to my diagnosis. What do I mean when I say that HIV is living with me? HIV is like my roommate. We share an apartment, but I have the master suite. Basically, I have chosen to take control of my virus and live every day to the fullest.

     “We constantly have to innovate, and we cannot rest on last year’s medical advances,” stated Miles, who presented the topic, “Lilly Diabetes Solution Center and the NNPA: Vital Roles in Partnership that Serve African American Comm-unities Around the Nation.” “With Magic Johnson, people thought when he made the announcement that he had HIV that he would die. It’s 30 years later, and he’s still here because people kept investing, and now you can see the difference,” Miles stated.

     “We are extremely honor-ed to have been chosen by The Humana Foundation as a partner for the EPIC project,” said Rosalyn Frazier, CEO, Broward Community & Family Health Centers. “This investment will provide us with adequate resources to educate, screen, intervene and empower our patient population who are food insecure and impacted by social isolation. It is consistent with our mission and focus on preventive care and health education to promote healthier lifestyles in the communities we serve.”

Perhaps, most impressive is that each of Dr. Oye’s four children followed in their father’s footsteps. David, Monique, Michelle, and Melissa Oye, each said they were inspired by their father and all have become doctors.
