On September 27th, Chainless Change, The Florida Courier, and the Desir family are appealing to Judge Fabienne Fahenstock of the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court for court-ordered release of multiple videos which captured the violent incident that led to Kevin Desir’s untimely death. Kevin, a resident of Pompano Beach, was beaten into a coma by Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) staff while detained at the North Broward Bureau Detention Center in January of 2021.
At the tender age of seven, Lynette Shaw tried to play hooky from school. She had tried to convince her uncle not to take her to school, but he had dutifully deposited her on the school steps. He drove off not realizing she was still intent on skipping school. As she slipped out the school yard that morning, she was intercepted and dragged off by a group of boys who tied her up, abused her and left her for dead. She managed to escape and made it home. She got in bed and pulled the covers up, hiding the evidence of the abuse from her mother.
Holy Cross Health has named Lauderhill resident Janet Clarke as Colleague of the Year. Clarke is part of the non-profit hospital’s environmental services housekeeping team.

One of the Association’s fundraising events that is dedicated to supporting the needs of people with sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait is its annual walk. The Sickle Cell Walk brings together people with sickle cell along with the parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, relatives, and providers in a network of friendship and support. Funds raised help fuel innovative research, advocacy, and critical educational programs and services. Together, we are creating a world where all people with sickle cell can reach their full potential. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County, which ignites the power and promise of youth by creating and supporting one-to-one mentoring relationships, stepped right up to join forces with the Broward affiliate of Take Stock in Children to provide scholarship opportunities for the youth in the program. Take Stock is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty for low-income, academically qualified students by providing opportunities for a post-secondary education.
St. Petersburg, Florida—The political invincibility of Governor Ron DeSantis is melting away according to a recent poll showing a dramatic shift in support to Democratic opponent Charlie Crist. The survey was taken after DeSantis shipped legal immigrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. The poll featured in Newsweek and Nate Silver’s 538 shows Crist leading DeSantis by 6 points, which is beyond the margin of error and a 12-point swing in Crist’s favor.
The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum is trying to undo the effect of “untold stories” by sharing history’s narratives from multiple viewpoints. In its newest exhibit, the museum explores the development of South Florida following the Civil War from the perspective of a formerly enslaved person, building a new life.
