On Saturday night, October 22, 2022, Oakland Park’s beloved daughter in the community celebrated her septuagenarian years with 100+ family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers at the popular Pompano Beach Women’s Center. Deborah Butler affectionately aka “Debra Ann” is known to always have time to lend a helping hand and share her positive, uplifting spirit with anyone facing a tragic loss, food insecurity, clothing – however, she can help.

Today at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County, 66 percent of the Little Brothers and Sisters we serve identify themselves as Black or Biracial. By comparison, only 26 percent of our volunteer mentors identify as Black or Biracial. Currently, 56 percent of our wait list – or 462 children – are Black or Biracial.
A good recitation on the aim of Redlining, was articulated by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The AP reported Mayor Bloomberg opined in his 2020 Presidential campaign that the great “Recession” was due to the credit given to poor people (insert-Black/Brown). He said, “It all started back when there was a lot of pressure on banks to make loans to everyone. People in these neighborhoods are poor, they’re not going to be able to pay off their mortgages…”
When it comes to Serving the People, Voting for Candidates and Engaging in Politics, consider ascribing to this notion: We cannot lead, where we don’t go—and cannot tell, what we don’t know! To challenge ourselves to do more, we must put in the work. Our actions really speak louder than our words. Educating and informing ourselves as voters is paramount! As responsible individuals, organizations, and institutions, we must hold ourselves accountable to learn of legislative policies, amendments and charter questions impacting our personal lives and community.
Florida Power & Light Company recently awarded more than $13,100 to Broward Education Foundation as part of its statewide EmPOWERing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Educators Program. Duty calls and Ol’ Peter Traceit, the Street Detective is hitting the sands hard. It appears that someone is out to do some serious damage to Ruth Carter-Lynch, a district five candidate for Broward School Board. Two flyers have gone out accusing Carter-Lynch of being a lobbyist for private schools and accusing her of being unaccountable to taxpayers, having lower academic standards, having lower standards for teachers, and discriminating against minorities and LGBTQ+ students. They are only targeting the Black community, the 33311.
At the start of COVID, Cassandra Esperant’s father was hospitalized for the disease and succumbed to it due to his comorbidities (pre-existing conditions). His daughter explained that in the beginning of COVID most people, including the nurses in hospitals, were unsure of what they were dealing with and were afraid. She remembers that the hospital staff was fully masked, and her father was placed in isolation. She was not allowed to visit. She would call the nurses’ station and request that her father receive water. She lives with the uncertainty of whether her father ever received the water to quench his thirst before he died. Dr. Cassandra Esperant has wanted to be an advocate since she was five years old, her father’s treatment and death ignited that fire.
The disease is preventable, though, thanks to vaccines and effective treatments for conditions that can precede the cancer. That’s why health care workers and even the World Health Organization are focusing on Miami’s Little Haiti to try to save lives.
