Friends and family of the late Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Carlton B. Moore will honor his memory with a special event from 3 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, in Osswald Park, 2220 NW 21 Ave., Fort Lauderdale. The Third Annual Carlton B. Moore Friends & Family Day will feature Miami Brown, a popular funk and R&B band, a bid whist tournament, a three-point basketball contest, food trucks, a kids’ zone, a vendors’ marketplace, a line dancing performance and more.
As students head back to school, they’re still coping with the complicated effects of the pandemic and the transition from virtual schooling back to more structured classrooms. This has led to a spike in student misconduct, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise: Students have been expected to go back to how things were in the rush to “return to normal,” when circumstances are anything but. This approach has denied students the opportunity to process their emotions and experiences, which can explain the greater rate of “acting out” as kids navigate complicated feelings and emotions. While the U.S. Department of Education seeks to mitigate school discriminatory disciplinary action against students of color and students with disabilities as a result of the pandemic, student disciplinary practices must be critiqued and revised to avoid causing more harm as students and teachers navigate this difficult time.
If confirmed by the Senate, Lapointe, 54, would become the first Black lawyer to serve in the most powerful federal law enforcement position in South Florida.
Acclaimed pianist Kris Nicholson will provide a free concert to honor the late Fort Lauderdale pioneer and esteemed lifelong educator, Ruth Taylor Giles, who passed on June 13. Nicholson will play at 4 p.m., on October 1, Giles’s 99th birthday.
The Street Detective has been trekking through the county as some are attempting to shovel pals of white beach sand on the head and reputation of Robert “Bob” McKinzie. Some are telling Traceit that dirty politics are at play after McKinzie buried Bob Dubose ten feet under in the recent County Commission race. Dubose and McKinzie once played extremely well in the sand with Dubose actually endorsing McKinzie when he ran for the city of Fort Lauderdale Commission seat. But fast forward a couple election cycles later, Dubose is reporting he regrets even getting in the sand pool with McKinzie and is throwing all kinds of mud on his name both publicly and privately.
The 1st annual event themed “The Power of One” highlighted how one person or organization can make an immense difference in the City of Lauderhill. Almost 200 guests gathered to support friends and family accept their Lauderhill Heroes award. Categories in which awardees received the H-E-R-O-E-S accolade included Healthcare, Education, Residents, Opportunities, and Service.
On Friday, attorneys for Michael Jennings, a Black pastor arrested while watering his neighbor’s flowers, filed a federal lawsuit alleging that the three Alabama police officers who arrested him violated his rights under the First and Fourth amendments.
A highlight of this campaign is Broward: Read for the Record! part of the Jumpstart Read for the Record global efforts to raise awareness around the critical importance of early literacy and increase access to high-quality children’s books. Each year, Read for the Record brings together millions of adults and children as they read the same book on the same day, building an intergenerational community through reading. The book selected for this year is Nigel and the Moon written by Antwan Eady and illustrated by Gracey Zhang. The book, published by HarperCollins, encourages children to celebrate where they come from, who they are, and who they want to be. The author will be in South Florida for the Broward County Library’s Literary Conference, and is scheduled to read to children at Thurgood Marshal Elementary.
