     I’m so excited to be writing this blog on the last day of January, as I have not missed a month of writing about national parks in 20 years. Every day I post prolifically about them on social media. Since I wrote last December, my husband Frank and I changed residence in Jamaica, moving from our friend’s placid gardens in the countryside to the high energy mountains above Kingston. When we first walked in and saw the view from the balcony we immediately told the agent, “Cancel the other appointments. We’re taking this.”

     Hallandale born, Fort Lauderdale raised, Reshad Akeem Hope has been selected as one of the Navy’s “Hometown Heroes”, a program that highlights the Navy’s newest incoming officers. It is a sort of boot camp for Navy officers. It is NOT for the faint of heart. 

           Coincidentally, Cathleen Dean, an award-winning producer, is also the Director of Art and Theatre at the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center. On the heels of her Best Documentary Short Award for the short film ‘BEING’ at the Roxbury International Film Festival last year, Cathleen partnered with Diversity in Aquatics, and their collaboration produced her latest film, Wade in the Water: Drowning in Racism.

     Just when Black and Democratic lawmakers were speaking out and fighting back, coalescing with democratic forces outside the legislature, Governor DeSantis caved.  We think DeSantis’ fear motivated his abrupt change to have Secretary of State Laurel Lee seat newly elected Daryl Campbell of Broward County.

 The retirement of Stephen Breyer creates a critical decision for the President to make. Biden confirmed the nominee would be the first Black woman on the high court on Thursday. A list of potential nominees circulated in Washington before Breyer’s retirement plans became public. Officials in the White House Counsel’s office started to build files on multiple candidates. Biden said he would make his decision by the end of February.

     Pompano Beach Arts has a variety of concerts planned for February. Fan favorites Soulful Sundays and Live and Local return with two stellar bands while Jazz Reflections offers a brilliant tribute to Black jazz composers. Tickets and details at www.pompanobeacharts.org
