The Pompano Beach CRA is proud to announce the McNab House Restoration and Botanical Gardens is the 2021 winner of the “Out of the Box” category in the annual Florida Redevelopment Association Awards.
The CSC is proud to announce that Dr. Sharetta Remikie has joined staff as the first Chief Equity and Community Engagement Officer. Dr. Remikie began in her new post on October 18th, 2021. The newly created position replaces what was previously the Chief Communications Officer one, that was held by Sandra Bernard-Bastien. Ms. Bernard-Bastien retired on September 30th.
Florida A&M University (FAMU) announced during its Homecoming celebration today that it received $1.5 million from the Knight Foundation to add multimedia functionality to the University’s new amphitheater. This new public space, which includes the Will Packer Performing Arts Amphitheater, will be known as the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Plaza.
“The USDA has a documented history of discriminating against Black people and communities of color. The federal government’s attempt to rectify this injustice should be applauded, not stopped,” said Damon Hewitt, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. “If this critical assistance is not provided soon, Black farmers and other farmers of color who have struggled to overcome decades of discrimination and the economic impacts of the global pandemic will face the threat of losing their land and their livelihoods.” — Greene County Democrat
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County recently received a $30,000 grant from Truist Foundation to support the agency’s powerful mission of igniting the power and promise of youth through one-to-one mentoring relationships. The funding from the Truist grant is dedicated to enhancing technology at the nonprofit, strengthening long-term sustainability to continue its mission for years to come.
Ali Cultural Arts Center is thrilled to welcome The Melton Mustafa Orchestra to the stunning outdoor covered courtyard venue in Pompano Beach. The orchestra, started by the late Grammy® Award-winning artist Melton Mustafa, is now led by his son, Melton Mustafa, Jr., a renowned saxophone player. The orchestra is the only African American-led 18-piece jazz big band in South Florida. The concert is Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available at www.pompanobeacharts.org. Food and beverages will also be on sale.
Since the begin of time, young people have been at the forefront of making a difference. On Wednesday they did just that, The Tallahassee Dream Defenders had a rally about House Bill 1. Over 300 young people were on the zoom to hear what the bill stands for and what they can do to stop the bill from passing. The event started with a series of questions to the audience to see how informed they were with the bill.
House Bill 1 will give law enforcement and prosecutors tools to prevent violence and property distraction during protests. The bill is sponsored by representative Fernandez and other representatives. The bill will also impose felony penalties on protesters, who will be denied bail and detain them until trial.
