The Booker T. Washington Tornadoes stormed home to a hero’s welcome Thursday afternoon. BTW rallied to score 15 points and force a key second-half turnover in the final 5:25 to beat Jacksonville’s Bolles Bulldogs 25-21 in the Class 4A state championship in Daytona Beach Wednesday night. “I think that’s been the story of our season: we’ve been the comeback kings or the never give up group,” associate head coach Ben Hanks said. The victory gave BTW its sixth state championship.

      What the Eagles expected to be a cakewalk, turned out to be good win for Miami. Dolphins entered the game at 2-9, while the Eagles entered at 5-6. It is a horse race in the NFC East, with Cowboys leading the division at 6-6. Eagles are now a game behind. A win yesterday would’ve had the Eagles at 6-6, tied with Dallas.

     But despite being inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975, Russell never acknowledged the honor or accepted his Hall of Fame ring. When asked why he essentially boycotted the ceremony, Russell would only reply that he had his “own personal reasons.” Throughout his post-NBA career, he refrained from referring to himself as a “Hall-of-Famer” and never explained why.

Buffalo came down to face Miami for their second match-up this season, and both were wins for the Bills. Ryan Fitzpatrick was under center for both games, throwing for more passing yards this game but had no touchdowns or interceptions

Dillard High School quarterback Zamir Jones was named the game’s MVP after winning the 50th annual Soul Bowl 61 to 14 against rival Blanche Ely High School. Jones completed 7 of his 14 passes for a total of 130 yards and three touchdowns. The Panthers are the only Broward County team to end the regular season with an unbeaten record of 10-0 and are headed into the playoffs this week to face Lely High School (at Dillard) from Collier County in Naples.

     The Jets came into Sunday’s game 1-6, and even though the Dolphins were 0-7, there was no way they were going to let the Jets come into their house and beat them. The Dolphins got off to a good start, having a 21 to 12 lead at halftime. This is head coach Brian Flores first win this season, and it was against a rival. How does it feel coach? “It feels good. The first thing I would say is players win games. We coach them but players win games,” he says. “That group, they did a really nice job today. We didn’t get off to the best start; but like all year, we’ve dealt with a lot of adversity and these guys know how to deal with that and they came back, and we played well after that slow start.”

     The National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Board of Governors, meeting at Emory University in Atlanta, voted unanimously on Tuesday to begin a process that would let college athletes to “benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness.”
