The community came together for a special event paying tribute to the late Congressman John Lewis and highlighting the significance of Black votes in shaping our future. The candlelight memorial and fish fry took place on July 17th at Burrows Electric Co. in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

The event featured free food and beverages, courtesy of Pleasure of the Sea, who donated fish for the occasion. Attendees lit candles and sang the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” before hearing from candidates who spoke about the importance of this year’s election.

Following the memorial, a fish fry symbolized the importance of community and collective action. The event also featured a discussion on the crucial role Black votes play in determining our country’s direction.

As Pamela Henry noted, “John Lewis’ life and work serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for us all. This event is a testament to his enduring legacy and a reminder that our voices matter. We must continue to fight for justice and equality, and every vote is a crucial step towards creating a better future.”

The event echoed the words of John Lewis, who once said, “Your vote is precious. Almost sacred. It’s the most nonviolent tool we have to create a more perfect Union.”
