    Chi Psi Omega Chapter of AKA host health fair

         Chi Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, held its annual health fair, appropriately titled “A Focus on Women’s Health and Cancer Awareness” with over 200 community participants in attendance Oct. 6, 2012 at Northwest Regional Library in Coral Springs. 

        This event was co-sponsored by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Miami/Fort Lauderdale. Many participants pre-registered and vendors included: Blood Mobile Services from Community Blood Center of South Florida, Inc., Broward County Health Department Free Mammovan Services, Florida Breast & Cervical Cancer Prevention, Holy Cross Hospital Community Outreach Program, Broward County Health Department Kinship Care Initiative, Broward Health Community Health Services: Breast Cancer Education, Broward Community and Family Health Centers, Broward County Health Department WIC Program, FAMU College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kellogg, American Automobile Association (AAA), Wal-Mart (vision screening, glucose and blood pressure), Juice Plus, Costco Wholesale, Principal Financial Group, and Everest Institute (Men’s Health Display) .

        Fifteen young ladies involved in the chapter’s International Initiative I (AKA), Emerging Young Leaders (EYL Girls, Grades six through eight) and the signature program of International President, Carolyn House-Stewart, Esq. were visible to make this event a tremendous success. The young ladies created health display boards and set up their own tables, greeted and invited participants to the event, conducted surveys and collected evaluations, advertised gift baskets and give-a-ways and served as photographers, taking pictures of participants. Breast Cancer Awareness promotional items were available for purchase and proceeds benefitted the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

        Initiative III: Global Poverty provided a low-income comprehensive medical display of resources for women empower themselves to be progressive.

        The Connection Committee conducted voter registration for participants who were new voters, in need of card replacements, updates, name, address or political party changes.

        Special thanks to sponsors Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Broward County Library of Florida, and Chris Gamble Foundation Fund. Participants readily received screening results on the back of their program to take with them.

        Chapter members in attendance were Barbara J. Thomas, president; Lisa Smith, chairman, Yulanda C. Ellis, co-chairman, Gwendolyn D. Bush, Sherri Cooper, Nichole Maurrase, Jerelene Franklin, Revertha Grace, Olivia Hilton, Emma Kurtz, Joel D. McCray, Trellanee Moore-Adderley, Veronica Phillips, Jennifer Reckley, Claudette Thompson, Trivel Cooper McKire and Luwando Wright-Hines.

        Susan B. McCray of Kappa Kappa Omega Chapter, Pompano Beach, provided assistance as well and more importantly, six volunteers also provided assistance and made this event successful.
