Congressman Hastings on one of his timely visits to the Westside Gazette.

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement on the 50th anniversary of the Westside Gazette, Broward County’s oldest and largest African American owned and operated newspaper:

“It is my distinct honor to congratulate the Westside Gazette on its 50th anniversary. This weekly paper continues to be known for its crusade against racism and injustice.

“From raising awareness to the needs of the underserved and underrepresented, to the battle against economic disparity in Broward County, the Westside Gazette has always been at the forefront of engaging in and championing the type of journalistic integrity that puts the needs and concerns of the people first.

“Their fifty years of professionalism stand out even more so today as too many regions have suffered misfortune, having succumbed to modern economic pressures that deprive communities of competent, local news outlets. I am so privileged to commemorate and honor the Westside Gazette’s longstanding achievement in journalism. I wish them many more years of continued success.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Vice-Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Dean and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
