Power is essential to life and it comes in many forms. Over time we have been able to use all sorts of natural means to generate power with things like wind, lightning, and water. Truthfully, what would it look like if we did not have electricity? Our lives would look completely different as we would be required to use the natural ways of the World to perform our daily activities. What if we were not able to store power in a capacitor? We would not be able to use our phones, laptops, and other technological devices without being plugged in. More than just power used to power our homes and technological devices, we each have power in our physical bodies.

Dr. Amos Wilson speaks of power in his book “Blueprint for Black Power”. When discussing power, he makes an enlightening observation that the definition itself takes on many forms based on the environment. This fact speaks on our perception of what power is, what it is used for, and where the source of power is located. Simply put, power is the essence of being alive. All living things have power. Power is essential in our ability to think, move, speak, create, or be.

When we think of someone powerless, we visualize a feeble person or a person that is weak. When we think of a powerful person, we see them in strength and with an innate ability to energize others. We charge or use a person’s power in our interactions. Have you ever had a conversation where you were drained when it concluded? Those types of situations drain a person’s power compared to a conversation that encourages the soul to take on whatever obstacle that is presented. We have that effect on each other. We speak life and death into each other. The effect is evident in the type of power that we hold whether positive or negative.

There are levels to the operation of power. To speak of power is simultaneously speaking of energy. Some forms are more subtle while others are more direct. Some people know their effect on people and monitor what they say or do regarding how their actions may be perceived, internalized, and repeated. Others abuse their power because of their man-made position over another. Others are unaware of their power and are used to propel others forward while wondering why their journey is stagnant. Of course, there are other scenarios, as we are all unique in our experiences, but being aware of the energy we have helps us to purposely control our overall effect on others and the Universe.

We create our current situation by things we thought and did in the past. The past generates the present as the present creates the future. It is all connected and one. Some things take more time to come to fruition than others. Like the plants, each thing has its season and just like the plants, the roots must be grown underground or internally before it can be seen in the physical. So, although graduating from College may take 2, 4, or 6+ years, getting a job to buy a pair of shoes takes less time to bring to fruition. Although both take power of the mind and body to accomplish, the amount of power needed and how long it takes to generate the appropriate amount of power depends on what is needed to be accomplished.

We must be in tune with the effects of our individual power to make it work as a whole. Whether it is an immediate biological family coming together or us becoming one as a race, we must be aware of our unique contributions to the entire unit. When we look at the possibilities in what we can accomplish operating as one, the opportunities are boundless, but it is so difficult to get everyone on one accord. This has everything to do with our culture and what we deem as important. Our ideals and ideologies must be in sync for each person to operate in the power needed to benefit the whole. We must know our purpose and how our power fits into what we are attempting to accomplish.

It is vital that we know ourselves. It is important that we are aware of our effect on others. We must be mindful of others’ energy and how we are to operate. When we know our effect on others. We must be mindful of others’ energy and how we are to operate. When we know our power, we then can utilize it effectively.
