Democratic Black Caucus Black History Month Celebration

On Saturday, February 10, 2024, the Broward County Democratic Black Caucus held its annual Black History Month celebration/fundraiser at the Herb Skolnick Center in Pompano Beach. President Robin Figueroa stated that the event is designed to stress the significance of Black History, highlight the importance of celebrating the accomplishments of Black people, promote voting, and ensure that African American contributions are NEVER FORGOTTEN!

The program began with a processional and performances by members of the Boyd Anderson High School band and Impact, the exceptionally talented step team from Piper High School, Sunrise. Following the invocation by Pastor Robert Lynch,  and  the pledge of allegiance led by Mistress of Ceremony Christine Jones, introduction of elected officials including U. S. Senate candidate Stanley Campbell and Congresswoman Sheila Sherfilus McCormick, the singing of the Black National Anthem “ Lift Every Voice and Sing,” Black History Inspirations performed by Cultural Inspirations, an inspiring video presentation from National Democratic Chairman Jamie Harrison, and an invigorating message from Dr. Donald Cleveland, dinner was served.

The highlight of the evening was Scholarship Presentations led by Brandy Edelson and presented by President Figueroa, Margate Commissioner Anthony Caggiano and Michelle Rose Lai. The Janet Burnett Community Service Award was presented to Westside Gazette publisher Mr. Bobby R. Henry for his Herculean efforts in promoting justice and equality, being a voice for the voiceless and seeking the truth in every aspect of community involvement no matter the consequences. Mr. Henry is presently serving, in addition to his duties as the Westside Gazette publisher, as the chairman of the NNPA, the National Newspaper Publishers Association. As he likes to say, “We are deeply rooted and will not be moved. “

The next honoree was former Broward County mayor Dr. Barbara Sharief, recipient of the Presidential Leadership Award because of her unwavering commitment and focus on enhancing access to affordable and high-quality healthcare and housing for every Floridian. Dr. Sharief is also committed to reducing the overall cost of living and home insurance while simultaneously safeguarding voting rights and reproductive rights. She is presently running as a candidate for Florida State Senate District 35.

The highlight of the evening, however, was the presentation of the Broward County Democratic Black Caucus Scholarship Award to Ms. Brianna Figueroa, a senior at Monarch High School, who possesses impeccable academic credentials and has demonstrated  an unparalleled commitment to education with an extraordinary 5.1 grade point average, placing her among the top 2%  in a class of 547. Her academic success stands as a testament to her unwavering perseverance, dedication, and intellectual prowess.

As the Battalion Commander of the JROTC program, she has exemplified true leadership, guiding and inspiring peers to reach their full potential.

Brianna’s exceptional performance and consistent excellence was noted within the JROTC community as she was honored with the Distinguished Cadet Award for holding the highest GPA in the program for four consecutive years.

Brianna also serves as the Vice President of the National Honor Society,  showcasing her commitment to service and dedication to making a difference. In addition, her contributions as a tutor for Mu Alpha Theta and involvement in the Hope Sunshine Club are a testament to her willingness to support and uplift others. Other affiliations which have benefited greatly from Brianna’s involvement include the  Broward County Democratic Black Caucus and A Vision of Redemption, organizations that demonstrate her commitment to social justice in creating positive change within her community. Additionally, Brianna’s entrepreneurial spirit shone through her role as the co-owner of Merfig Enterprise, showcasing her creativity, leadership, and business acumen.

“ It is with heartfelt congratulations and our deepest respect that we hereby present you – Brianna Figueroa -with this Honorary Award for Scholarship, recognizing you as an exceptional scholar, leader, and role model, “ stated Brandy Edelson, representing the Office of Congressman Jared Moskowitz.

President Robin Figueroa concluded the important work inspired by the Broward County Democratic Black Caucus celebration thusly: “Our commitment to justice and equality allows us to use this Black History Month as a catalyst for unity, empowerment, and engagement. Together, we have the power to shape history and create a more inclusive and equitable future for all.”

As people around the world celebrate and acknowledge Black History Month, the Broward Democratic Black Caucus, continued its tradition of honoring trailblazers in our community at their annual Black History Month dinner.

This year’s honorees were; Dr. Barbara Sharief: Presidential Leadership Award and Bobby Henry: The Janet Burnett Community Service Award.

The evening began with attendees getting an opportunity to see a table of historical artifacts from Dr. Sharief, and a lesson on American currency with age-old actual pieces. Community resident and African and African American studies historical guru Donald Cleveland gave a wonderful message aligned with the purpose of Black History month. Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus McCormick reminded the attendees of the importance of knowing the issues, registering to vote and then submitting your vote. Student dancers, a step team, and adult dancers all showed the beauty and traditions of the heritage through powerful performances.

President of the Broward County Democratic Caucus, Robin Figueroa said, “Let us continue to educate the world about the countless inventors, scientists, artists, writers, activists and leaders who have shaped history, making remarkable advancements across all fields of endeavor. Our commitment to justice and equality allows us to use this Black History Month as a catalyst for unity, empowerment, and engagement. Together, we have the power to shape history and create a more inclusive and equitable future for all.”
