Eddie Frasier: A Name to Remember

By Alexander Speid, Westside Gazette

With the increase of cases regarding COVID-19 and reported cases of infected hitting 2 million, death has become a common topic to hear in the news. However, it is rare to have such a well-known figure in the Fort Lauderdale community succumb to such a tragic fate so early into his blossoming career. And so, it is with a heavy heart to learn about the death of 34-year-old Dillard High School Football coach, Eddie Frasier.

Frasier was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, first graduating from Dillard in 2003, who then went on to be an alumni of  Florida Atlantic University. He returned to Fort Lauderdale where he coached youth football teams. He had taught at Dillard since 2009, before returning to coach the Panthers  Middle School team in 2013.

In his first season as head coach in 2019, he led Dillard to an undefeated regular season, all the way to the Class 6A-Region 4 State Finals this past fall. The panthers were gearing up for another perfect regular season for the 2021 season with a 17-game regular winning streak. That is, until the unthinkable happened.

Monday morning, April 13th, it was confirmed by Broward County Medical Examiner that Eddie Frasier had passed away. He was reported to have been found in his home unresponsive.

Shawn Cerra, Direcctor of Athletics and Student Activities, had this to say: “On behalf of the Broward County Athletic Association, we all mourn the passing of coach Eddie Frasier. Coach Frasier was a tremendous individual, professionally and personally.”

He goes on to speak accolades of his accomplishments as a coach for young athletes, as well as his importance to the Dillard community.

The cause or manner of death remains undetermined, and his relatives said that it was not caused by COVID-19.

Frasier was a leading, positive force for the Fort Lauderdale community in his effort to give Dillard High School a viable chance at major football stardom. The Miami Dolphins rewarded Frasier with the George F. Smith High School Coach of the Year award, and he was Sun Sentinel’s Broward County Class 8A-6A Coach of the Year.

Many condolences have been given to the friends and family closest to him from people both within and out of the Dillard community. His influence had reached many people’s hearts with his positive attitude towards a great future.

His last Facebook post gave congrats to the anniversary of coach Todd and Tina Rahming, who always treated him like their own son. Though he has parted from this world, we must never forget what he has done for Dillard and Fort Lauderdale, as one of the most well-known coaches in our community.

May Coach Eddie Frasier Rest In Peace.
