HONORING OUR PAST… EMBRACING OUR FUTURE

Arthur Kennedy, Sr. Mr. Johnny Alexander, Torey Alston, Brian Johnson and Bobby DuBose

On behalf of the Sistrunk Historical Organization, we are pleased to announce that the following Broward County leaders will serve as notable Grand Marshals for the “2023” Sistrunk Parade/ Festival. Our Sistrunk Historical Pioneers Grand Marshals are Coaches Arthur Kennedy, Jr.  and Johnny Alexander. The Education Grand Marshal is Mr. Torey Alston and the Community Grand Marshal is Mr.  Brian Johnson with our Civic Grand Marshal former State Representative  Mr. Bobby DuBose.

What one does for his fellow man often leaves an unmistakable, indelible imprint on community, society and the world. So it is with Coaches Art Kennedy and Johnny Alexander. Coach Art Kennedy who for many years was Congressman Alcee Hastings’ Chief of Staff and a former educator in both Orange and Broward schools as well as an Administrator, Broward County Public Schools . Though family obligations kept him from attaining a college education, Coach Johnny’s dedication to the youth, particularly the Dillard community and Western Tigers Youth Program, has earned him an honorary doctorate of humanities, conferred upon him by the myriad of youths whose lives he touched.

Both of these men mold and shaped countless lives of youths who were positively transformed – by love and sometimes tough love – with creative leadership and dedication that they both

Brian Johnson is President/CEO, Broward County Minority Builders Coalition, Inc.

Presently serve as the President/CEO of a 43 year old nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide (1) capacity building opportunities for minority and women owned construction related firms, (2) home rehabilitation services for the elderly and low/very low income families in Broward County, and (3) family supporting job training and placement assistance for unemployed/underemployed workers in the construction industry.

On Friday, August 26, 2022, the Governor appointed former Broward County Commissioner Torey Alston to the School Board of Broward County, Florida. Subsequently, on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, School Board Member Alston took the oath of office administered by Dr. Earlean Smiley, former Principal at Blanche Ely High School and former Deputy Superintendent for Broward Public Schools, who has watched Mr. Alston blossom through the years. School Board Member Alston became the 1st Student Advisor to the School Board to serve on the School Board of Broward County, Florida.

Former State Representative Bobby B. DuBose – believes strongly in community service and has volunteered his time serving  in many civic organizations since childhood. He is a life member of the NAACP, a life member of  Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., a life member of the University of Florida Alumni Association and  Florida Blue Key. After serving many years as Commissioner for District 3 with the City of Fort Lauderdale he served two terms in the Florida House of Representatives and held the position of Democratic Leader Pro Tempore. Lastly Representative DuBose served as the Democratic Leader of the Florida House of Representatives from 2020 to 2022.

We look forward to honoring this group as they parade down the Historical Sistrunk Blvd on Feb 25th at 9 a.m.
