Lee Daniels to speak at Lauderhill’s 14th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Gala

The City of Lauderhill Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force is currently hosting several events honoring the life and accomplishments of one of America’s most influential activists ever, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Official MLK 2014 Gala and Program will feature the acclaimed screenwriter, director, and producer Lee Daniels – whose most recent project is “The Butler”.

Lee Daniels’ movies are typically narratives sometimes described as bold stories that are real and gritty. “The Butler” follows the life of a White House butler who served under eight different United States Presidents spanning over three decades. This film starred Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Robin Williams, and several other “A” list actors. “Precious”, “Shadowboxer”, and “Monster’s Ball” were also some of Daniel’s critically acclaimed works.

Vice Mayor Bates, Chair of the MLK Task Force, explains, “It is imperative we not only celebrate Dr. King’s legacy at our annual gala, but that we teach our youth about Civil Rights and how much the movement has impacted our lives.”  The Task Force is hosting a Civil Rights Spelling Bee including Elementary School students and a Brain Bowl which includes Middle School students from local schools. Winners of the competitions will be honored at a televised City Commission meeting on Monday, Jan. 27 at 7 pm. The MLK Gala will be at Screen Post Productions, 3500 N.W. 15 St., on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $60.

For more information or to purchase tickets for the Gala featuring Lee Daniels please call (954) 730- 3000. Tickets can be purchased at Lauderhill City Hall, 5581 W. Okld. Pk. Blvd., Lauderhill, Fla. Tickets are sold on a first come, first serve basis.
