Miami is giving long-overdue flowers to one of its most influential cultural icons. On a stretch of NW 11th Avenue—between 58th and 60th Streets—a new name now proudly marks the pavement: Luther Campbell Way. The honor celebrates the indelible legacy of Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, a pioneer of Miami bass music and a fearless defender of artistic freedom.
Uncle Luke isn’t just a founding father of the 2 Live Crew and the high-energy, unmistakably Miami bass sound that defined an era. He also made history in the courtroom. When his group’s lyrics were put on trial, Campbell didn’t back down—he fought all the way to the Supreme Court, ultimately securing a landmark victory that helped protect freedom of expression in music and beyond.
This street naming is more than symbolic—it’s a statement. It recognizes the impact Campbell made on music, on civil liberties, and on the cultural identity of Miami itself. For decades, he’s been a force—challenging norms, elevating the city’s voice, and mentoring generations of artists and youth.
Now, with “Luther Campbell Way,” Miami officially puts respect where it’s long been due.
And as they say: give people their flowers while they can still smell them. Luke, this one’s for you.
