Mentoring Program Helps Delray Celebrate Thanksgiving With Turkey Giveaway

Thanksgiving is about coming together as a community — and KOP Mentoring Network (KOPMN) is all about kids and community, the Delray Beach-based nonprofit organization joined the City of Delray Beach Community Improvement Department and its community partners recently to celebrate a free Thanksgiving turkey giveaway at Atlantic High School. Several dozen volunteers handed out the 25-pound turkeys to residents as they pulled up in their cars at the school’s parking lot on Tuesday evening. On Monday and Tuesday, several volunteers and students from the organization spent their days off from school unloading the turkeys from trucks into freezers then back onto the trucks. They then brought the birds to the school, where they were joined by principal Tara O’Campo, Assistant Police Chief Gene Sapino and Interim Community Improvement Department Director David Weatherspoon. The organization partnered with West Delray Collison Center, the City of Delray Beach Community Improvement Department, Tin Roof, Atlantic High School and the Delray Beach Elks Lodge to organize the event. Other partnering agencies were the Achievement Centers for Children and Families, EJS Project, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and CRA Media Group.
