DR-MARTIN-LUTHER-KINGMLK Celebration Committee announces new King Holiday Parade route

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — The Board of Directors of the Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Committee, Inc., (MLKCC) has announced a change in the route of the annual King Holiday Parade & Unity March. Scheduled for Monday, Jan. 18, 2016 (the Federal King Holiday), the parade line up will start at 9 a.m. at Northwest Fifth Avenue and Sistrunk Boulevard.  The parade will proceed east on Sistrunk to Andrews Avenue and south on Andrews Avenue to Huizenga Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Immediately following the parade, MLKCC and the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation will host the King Holiday Celebration of Unity and Multicultural Festival in Huizenga Park.

The MLKCC wanted to acknowledge the recent extension of Sistrunk Boulevard to Federal Highway and to expand participation in the King Holiday Celebration, according to Wayne Alexander, MLKCC board chair said. “Changing the parade route is symbolic,” Alexander explained. “The theme of the 2016 King Holiday Celebration is United We Complete the Dream and Andrews Avenue has traditionally separated Fort Lauderdale racially, socially and culturally,” Alexander.
