The North Broward County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated (The Links) hosted its sixth annual College Fair at Deerfield Beach High School on Oct. 30, 2012. This event was the result of a partnership between the The Links, BRACE (Broward Advisors for Continuing Education) and the Deerfield Beach High School Guidance Department.

During the spring and fall of each year, a variety of educational, vocational and military institutions are invited to present educational and career opportunities to high school seniors. In 2006, the event featured about five vendors and has grown to over 30 vendors this year.  Students visited representatives from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) such as Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU), Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), and Florida Memorial University (FMU).

Representatives from local colleges and universities, vocational schools, the military and the Broward Fire Academy were also available to discuss opportunities with over 500 students in attendance.

Bernice Bailey, member of the The Links and event chair-person stated, “This was a great opportunity to expose our young adults to a variety of opportunities afforded to them.

We are pleased to partner with Broward County Public Schools in assisting high school seniors in making important life decisions.” This event was consistent with The Links’s national initiative to expose students to HBCUs by hosting College Fairs. The partnership will continue with another College Fair in Spring 2013.

Linda Houston-Jones, president of the The Links, stated that “their chapter has established itself as the leader in helping to improve the lives of underserved communities;   providing more than 2,000  hours of community volunteer service through the arts, literacy, health & wellness, scholarships and other community services.”
