Thank you, Florida Panthers for such a visible celebration of Black History and reminding us that Black History is American History.  The National Hockey League and its Commissioner, Gary Bettman, has stepped up its efforts to diversify its fan base in recent years. The leading franchise in that effort is the Florida Panthers, led by the Violas (Vinnie, Teresa, and sons) and their CEO, Matthew Caldwell.  From the moment they acquired the franchise, the Violas set out to build a winning team and become the pride of South Florida. Wow, have they done that! This season, the Panthers’ standing is 42-16-4 (1st Place in the Eastern Conference).

In addition to the Panthers support and advocacy for diversity, Mr. Viola and CEO Caldwell are both veterans and West Point Graduates; consequently, the Viola’s are also staunch supporters of the veteran community.  Veterans are prominently honored at their games and a key element of their charitable giving program. The most recent endeavor was the renovation and expansion of Fort Lauderdale’s Historic War Memorial. The project, originally estimated to cost $75 M, increased to $100M because of pandemic supply chain disruptions and the Viola’s commitment to retain the integrity and character of the original building, which dates back to the 1950’s. Rather than abandon the project, Mr. Viola forged ahead to “see it through” as only a true veteran would do.  The facility, in addition to showcasing its war related memorabilia, will bring ice hockey to the central city, which offers easier access for minority students and families in Fort Lauderdale.  It will house a training and medical facility for the players. And, yes, you too can learn ice hockey at this new facility as it opens its doors to the community.  We look forward to the grand opening.
