Singing competitions have been popular in our homes for generations. We’ve seen shows like Star Search, American Idol, and America’s Got Talent capture our hearts and make celebs out of no name talent. The Masked Singer is a different type of singing competition. It uses celebs as the ones that are being judged. This is the sixth singer for the Masked Singer. Fans were shocked to learn which legendary celeb was revealed behind the Cupcake mask this past week.

Legendary singer Ruth Pointer was the soulful voice behind the Cupcake costume. She was revealed after only two performances. Fans first heard a glimpse of the singer when she covered “Heatwave” by another iconic girl group Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. Her second performance was the one that got her eliminated and unmasked. For her second performance, she did “Finesse” by Bruno Mars and Cardi B.  The iconic singer also showed off some of her rapping chops as well.

There were several weird guesses from the panel of celebrity investigators. During week 1, Robin Thicke suspected it could have been RuPaul. He mentioned that the performer was on the taller side, and the singing voice sounded either like a man, or a woman. RuPaul was not a bad guess. Jenny McCarthy agreed with Thicke, while Ken Jeong believed it could be Tina Turner. Former girl group member Nicole Scherzinger thought that the cupcake could be Grammy Award Winner Roberta Flack during the first week. Ultimately, it was Scherzinger who guessed correctly.

“She had been a member of a girl group”, she told People Magazine.  “I thought she would be the one because most girl groups know other girl groups’ voices a little bit. We had had an encounter on a flight once, so I had met her, and I think she remembered that too.”

As a contestant on the show, it’s your responsibility to give the audience clues into your identity. Some of the clues Pointer gave really threw every once for a loop. Some of the clues she gave was that she has been married several times. She even called herself the “ Black Liz Taylor’’. It’s no secret that Pointer has been married five times. In one of the clues, it was mentioned that she is not used to being solo, she is used to sharing the stage. That was pretty much a nod to her days as a member in the girl group “The Pointer Sisters’’. It was originally planned for her and sister Anita to perform as a duo.

“There were supposed to be two Cupcakes and Anita’s having some health issues that we couldn’t avoid, so I ended up doing it by myself,” Pointer told judges. She also gave a sweet shout to her sister. “Sweetheart, I love you! I came to do what I needed to get home and support you.” “Thank you, guys, for having me! I’m a big fan of the show, I’ve been watching it the whole time.”

Fans of the show have seen tons of celebrities grace the stage. Some of the celebs seen on stage were Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child, Bill Nye the Science Guy, Gladys Knight, and Donny Osmond just to name a few. Past winners include Kandi Burruss, T-Pain, Wayne Brady, LeAnn Rimes, and the latest winner Nick Lachey. No matter the celeb, fans have shown up to support throughout all the seasons. Star power is obviously a key ingredient to the show. It’s probably why they have multi-talented comedian Nick Cannon as the host.

The Pointer Sisters have made a name for themselves throughout their careers. They have released fifteen studio albums and thirteen of their singles landed in the top twenty. Some of their most famous songs are “So Shy”, “Neutron Dance”, “Jump” (For My Love), “Automatic”, and “So Excited”. Country is a genre black people rarely get nominated in. However, The Pointer Sisters were not only able to be nominated for Best Country Vocal Performance, but they won as well. Their songs have been linked to almost every genre. Altogether, the ladies have three Grammys, four American Music Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In December 2016, Billboard Magazine ranked them as the 80th most successful dance artists of all time. The following year, Billboard also ranked them as the 93rd most successful Hot 100 Artists of all-time, and 32nd most successful Hot 100 Women Artists of all-time.

This season has seen a few other stars get revealed and sent home. Celebs like Dwight Howard, Larry “The Cable Guy ‘’, Vivica A. Fox, and Tyga have all been revealed. Fans also felt that sending Toni Braxton home was one of the biggest upsets in the show’s history. It’s also been speculated that there may be hip hop royalty on the show. Fans have begun to speculate that the voice behind the Skunk mask is none other than Faith Evans.

“I chose to be the Skunk because I relate to the duality, the yin and yang of it all,” she said during the first week on the show. “And while life’s not always black and white, there are always certainly two sides to every story. I’m here to tell mine. Over the years, I’ve seen it all, honey. There might be misconceptions that I’m quick to get into a fight. But, honey, that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ve learned you don’t always have to react when provoked. I took a break for a minute to focus on family. But I’m ready to get back out there…and make it do what it does, boo.”

The Masked Singer airs on Fox.
