There were close to one hundred participants including Broward County Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc and Emerging Young Leaders (EYL Girls) who participated and celebrated MLK Day of Service. This was definitely a day to commemorate the life, legacy and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The group provided multiple projects at Saint Laurence Chapel Day Shelter. These projects included sorting clothing and mail, bagging beans and rice, making hygiene kits for the homeless, making grocery bags for food pantry, making sandwiches, serving the homeless a hot breakfast and preparing a healthy lunch to the homeless,  most of whom were veterans.

The four Broward County Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. collaborated for the second year and provided a full day of service. The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Inc., an international service organization, provided supper and community service projects to veterans, communities in need and the homeless across the country. The presidents are JoeAnn Fletcher, Zeta Rho Omega; Barbara J. Thomas, Chi Psi Omega; Lisa Bell, Upsilon Xi Omega and Rendolyn Amaker, Kappa Kappa Omega Chapter.

Fletcher, who is also the CEO of Saint Laurence Chapel Day Shelter, was very grateful and excited about the collaborative partnership stated, “this is just what Saint Laurence Chapel is all about-giving back to the community and feeding the homeless and this partnership has helped to make that happen on this special day of service.”
