School Board approves changes in schools start, end times for 2013/14 school year

    By Nadine Drew

Several Broward County Public Schools will have new start and end times for the 2013/14 school year beginning August 19. The School Board, yesterday (June 11, 2013), approved the opening and closing school times at 23 schools and centers, which will save the District just over $500,000 in transportation costs.

For most schools, the change will amount from five- to 15-minute differences in start and dismissal times.

Other schools affected by the changes will experience greater time differences following the District’s review of school bell times to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.

Each year, the Transportation Department conducts a review and evaluation of its services to ensure that appropriate resources are in place to meet student transportation needs and compensate for student and program growth. This year’s review also considered opportunities to minimize and reduce operational costs to the District.

Changes in bell times will streamline bus routes and increase capacity for growth of transportation services.

Several options were analyzed for both their potential savings in the Transportation Department and the impact on schools and students.
