     On August 1, 1920, Henrietta Lacks was born as Loretta Pleasant in Roanoke, Virginia. This year will mark 104 years since she was born and her family’s over 70 year pursuit of justice for the taking of her cells without consent, (now widely known as ‘HeLa’ cells- scientists’ intentional efforts to hide her human existence by only referencing the first two letters of her first name -Henrietta (“He”) and the last two letters of her last name- Lacks (“La”).

Duane Keith Davis is a member of the California-based gang known as The South Side Compton Crips and was a childhood friend of N.W.A. member Eazy-E. During the early ’90s, Davis built a friendly relationship with Sean “Diddy” Combs. Rumors that someone would be charged in Shakur’s death have swirled for years with no arrests made.

Founded by the Innocence Network, a collective of organizations dedicated to offering pro-bono legal and investigative services for those seeking exoneration, Wrongful Conviction Day aims to rectify the root causes of these miscarriages of justice while also providing support to the exonerated as they reintegrate into society.

City of Lauderhill Commissioner Lawrence “Jabbow” Martin has held Breast Cancer Awareness Month events for the last two years and is planning more for this October 2023. Besides turning City Hall pink with a giant PINK twinkling light ribbon, this Commissioner organizes and leads a Community Bike Ride through the City of Lauderhill – dressed in PINK head to toe! This annual PINK UP Bike Ride and Community Health Fair brings awareness to everyone. It reminds us all that prevention and early detection is key to beating breast cancer. In addition, the funds raised go to cancer research organizations and residents who are battling the dreadful disease.
