The City of Lauderhill Mayor and Commissioners dedicate Northwest Ninth Court as “Emma Harvey Court” in honor of the late community activist

    Submitted by Leslie Johnson

LAUDERHILL, FL — The Street known as “Northwest Ninth Court” in Lauderhill was renamed “Emma Harvey Court” on Sept. 13, 2012. The Harvey family and residents of the City of Lauderhill celebrated the beloved and admired community leader – the late Mrs. Emma Harvey.

Mrs. Emma Harvey, who is survived by her four children, 28 grandchildren, and loving husband Dr. H.L. Harvey, Sr. (who recently celebrated his 101st birthday) spent much of her time selflessly improving their neighborhood. Mrs. Harvey and family volunteered to hold block parties, dances, fish fries and various activities to create a sense of community while raising money for needs in their community. The dollars raised eventually went towards feeding and sheltering the homeless as well as getting a community center with ball fields and a playground as the County matched the funds she raised with grant dollars.

On May 14, 2012, a Proclamation declared the “Emma Harvey and Harvey Family Day” in the City of Lauderhill. With that, residents in the community presented the City Commission with a petition to have the street renamed after Mrs. Harvey, whose family still lives on that street. Emma’s daughter, Judy Harvey Ramnouth, exclaimed, “It is truly an honor to know my mother from heaven is seeing all of her hard work getting recognized as Northwest Ninth Court is named after her.”
