For the past two years, the Beta Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has been a driving force in the greater Miami community, embodying its fraternal aims: manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind.

Under the leadership of Chapter President Reginald Mathis — a prominent attorney for International Music Group — the chapter has pursued an ambitious vision. Mathis introduced the B.R.I.D.G.E. Agenda, aimed at mobilizing Alpha Phi Alpha members through innovative community initiatives. Joining him in this effort is esteemed Judge Daryl Trawick, recently honored in Howard University School of Law’s Alumni Judges Gallery for his contributions to the judiciary.

A Legacy of Leadership and Service

Founded in 1937, Beta Beta Lambda has upheld a legacy of excellence for 87 years. Among its founding members was Dr. Ira P. Davis, a pivotal figure in local civil rights efforts. His home, known as the “Little White House” in Overtown, served as a hub for organizing Miami’s first Black police force. In recognition of his contributions, a street was named in his honor on Nov. 17, 2023.

Today, the chapter boasts members from diverse professional backgrounds, including lawyers, judges, entrepreneurs, educators, medical professionals, engineers and city planners. Yet their unifying thread remains unwavering service and advocacy.

    Strengthening Community Through Philanthropy

Beta Beta Lambda’s commitment to service is evident through annual initiatives such as the Community Sleigh Ride event, where fraternity members distribute toys to local childcare centers while offering guidance and encouragement.

The chapter also partnered with the City of Miami Gardens for a shoe giveaway, providing over 150 pairs of shoes to children in need. Additionally, at the height of election season, they hosted “Souls to the Polls,” encouraging civic participation through voter engagement efforts.

    Championing Health and Education

Beyond philanthropy, Beta Beta Lambda prioritizes community well-being through monthly walks promoting heart health and exercise. These events have drawn participation from organizations like Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The chapter also organizes health seminars focusing on colorectal and colon cancer awareness, as well as healthy eating habits.

In education, the fraternity’s Project Alpha empowers young men with knowledge about sexuality, fatherhood and their roles in relationships. Meanwhile, Knights of Gold, Alpha Phi Alpha’s flagship mentorship program, provides leadership development opportunities for youth.

On May 17, 2025, the Derby Day Party will raise scholarship funds for Knights of Gold participants. This lively event offers an exciting blend of food, live horse racing, betting, dancing, a silent auction and music. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.

Honoring Achievements and a Lasting Legacy

Alpha men continue to earn accolades for their contributions. Recently, Dr. Joseph Gay was honored for his 51 years of service in dentistry, while Pierre Rutledge received recognition from the City of Miami for his work on the Housing and Commercial Loan Committee. Additionally, George South was promoted to Major in the U.S. Air Force, and Dr. Santarvis Brown was highlighted in Insight Success as The Most Impactful Leader in Education to Look For.

The fraternity also mourns the passing of community giant Dr. Solomon Stinson, a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha. His dedication to mentoring youth through Miami-Dade County Public Schools leaves an enduring mark. His legacy lives on through his grandson, Nicholas James Harvey, who was initiated into the fraternity on March 22, 2025 — ensuring that the light of Alpha continues to shine brightly in the community

Dr. Donald G. Nicolas is a member of the Beta Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. He serves as the Associate Editor to the Sphinx, which shares stories with local news entities about the work of the fraternity. Professionally, Dr. Nicolas has been an esteemed educator, as well as a district and school administrator for over 20 years.
