The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., founded on November 17, 1911, at Howard University by Founders Oscar J. Cooper, Frank Coleman and Edgar A. Love along with faculty advisor Dr. Ernest E. Just, held its 84th Grand Conclave in Tampa, Florida, despite opposition from some members due to Governor Ron DeSantis’ racist agenda. The conclave, led by Grand Basileus Ricky Lawrence Lewis and his Supreme Council, aimed to confront discriminatory policies head-on. The event, dubbed “A Conclave with a Purpose,” featured various components, including:
– Nationwide purchasing and distribution of banned books
– A silent march and protest with over 1,500 participants
– Support for
minority-owned businesses
– A Black History artifacts exhibit
– Voter registration and education mobilization drive
– A health seminar featuring Alonzo Mourning
The conclave saw a historic turnout, with over 8,400 registered attendees, making it the largest in fraternal history. The event was hosted by Pi Iota Chapter, Tampa, and featured participation from Region II chapters: Omicron Tau, Ft. Pierce; Kappa Upsilon, West Palm Beach; Lambda Alpha Alpha, Delray Beach; Sigma Delta Delta – FAU, Boca Raton; Theta Gamma Gamma, Belle Glade; Eta Nu, Pompano Beach; and Zeta Chi, Ft. Lauderdale. 470 brothers from Region ll attended the conclave. Outgoing Grand Keeper of Finance, Brother Johnnie Smith, is to be commended for his stellar service. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, particularly Region ll and his home chapter, Zeta Chi, wish you continued success in your personal, business and fraternal life ahead.
The conclave also saw the presence of familial ties, including Brothers Levi Henry, Father; Bobby R. Henry, Son; and Broderick Henry, Grandson. Additionally, the sons of the 35th Grand Basileus, Dr. Dorsey C. Miller, in his absence, Eric and Dorcey lll, represented their fraternity and father with great pride and humility. Brother Sam Clear, a Livingstone College alum, received his 60th year pin in Tampa. A tireless, committed member of Eta Nu, Brother Clear pledged Lambdsa Psi in 1964.
Personal gratification for this writer emanated from inspiring religious services and a volunteer chorale group led by former Grand Chaplain Walter T. Richardson and preeminent Omega vocalist Brother Robert Porter, adding to the event’s significance. The 84th Grand Conclave exceeded expectations, accomplishing its goals and cementing the fraternity’s unity and purpose. The next conclave is set for Cincinnati in 2026.
