As the nation observes Mental Health Awareness Month, the Two Minute Warning Show brings viewers a timely and thought-provoking episode titled: “Mental Health and Its Impact on the Criminal Justice System – Is It Justice or Is It Just Us? “This powerful discussion, airing Thursday, May 22nd, will feature two nationally respected scholars who are helping reshape how we think about justice, mental health, and systemic inequities.
Dr. Sherrise Truesdale-Moore of Minnesota State University, Mankato, and Dr. Patrick Webb of North Carolina A&T State University have recently joined the Black Criminologists Forum—a national network of nearly 70 Black Ph.D.-level experts in criminology, criminal justice, and juvenile justice. Founded by Attorney Anne T. Sulton, criminologist with a Ph.D. in criminology and criminal justice, the Forum offers a space for Black scholars to provide culturally informed, data-driven solutions to some of the country’s most pressing criminal justice issues.
This week’s show will explore the often-overlooked connections between mental health and the justice system—examining how untreated trauma, systemic racism, and lack of access to care disproportionately affect Black communities.
Dr. Truesdale-Moore brings over 30 years of professional experience to the discussion, with expertise in correctional program development, youth case management, and diversity training. Her most recent publication, “In the Mix: A Phenomenological Study Examining College Campus Experiences of Formerly Incarcerated Students” (2023), dives deep into the emotional and psychological challenges faced by individuals navigating reentry and higher education.
Dr. Webb, a seasoned academic and consultant for the U.S. Department of Justice, focuses on the use of research and statistical evidence to advocate for vulnerable populations. His work, featured in journals like the Journal of Negro Education and the Journal of Black Studies, often highlights the mental health consequences of systemic injustice.
Together, these experts will explore critical questions: Are mental health challenges being criminalized? Is the system designed to help or to punish? And what does real justice look like for communities long marginalized and over-policed?
