March 1st marks the first day of Women’s History Month.

Women’s History Month was founded in 1985 by Molly Murphy MacGregor, Mary Ruthsdotter, Maria Cuevas, Paula Hammett, and Bette Morgan. Women’s History Month is a time to recognize and salute women’s contributions to the American family and to society.

Women have been making these contributions since this continent was explored and settled and America won its independence.

Before becoming a month, Women’s History Month was cut down to just a week. However, Congress passed resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month and since 1995, each president issued annual proclamations designating the month of March as Women’s History Month.
