Clarence Pittman, Jr. was a native Miamian, a graduate of Booker T. Washington, and an alumnus of Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio.
He was the president of the International Longshoremen’s Association, Local #1416 AFL-CIO for over 31 years; he was Vice President of the South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District, Executive Representative of the International Longshoremen’s Association AFL-CIO, Member South Florida AFL-CIO and Member of South Eastern Dock and Marine Council.
Clarence Pittman, Jr. was a catalyst for ILA Local #1416 since 1956 and a Union official since 1965 in the distributions of considerable amounts of do-nations to the community. He demonstrated outstanding achievements in working with educational, social, political, Over Town Renovation/ Enhancement Projects. This included religious projects that have greatly enhanced many aspects of the community.
Clarence Pittman, Jr. has given unselfishly by contributing generously to countless charities and community projects and organizations as well as supported numerous political candidates whose ideals of humanitarianism coincide with the beliefs of the community.
His organizational involvements included: Member of Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, Greater Miami A. Phillip Randolph Chapter (APRI), Coalition of Black Trade Unionist (CBTU), and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), 5000 Role Models, and Brownsville Progressive Masonic Lodge #510 – Eight Masonic Houses, Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of The Mystic Shrine #149, The Miami Lords Club – Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., RETCO – Retired Employees of Transportation Coalition, Booker T. Washington Alumni – Class of 1952 and The Propeller Club of the United States and many more.
Clarence Pittman, Jr. has received numerous awards from the Training and Safety Award for Longshoremen on the Port of Miami, numerous Masonic Awards, Lord of the Year, United Negro College Fund (UNCF), Bethune Cookman College, Florida Memorial College, Dade County Public Schools and Private Schools, The Propeller Club of the United States; and many more from private, public, civic and social organizations. He was committed to aiding the fellow Union members as well as the community.
Clarence Pittman, Jr. was a devoted and loyal husband and father, married to Gwendolyn Willar Pittman, the fat-her of six children, grand-father of fifteen, great-grand-father of two, loving uncle and the godfather and friend of everyone who he encountered. He leaves a legacy of love and commitment for others to follow.
