Wilson Announces $173,585,880 in Emergency Education Funding for Florida’s K-12 Schools

Congresswoman WIlson

Recently, Congresswoman Wilson announced that Florida will receive $173,585,880 million in emergency education funding as a result of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act that Congress passed last month. The funding comes from the Governor’s Emergency Edu-cation Relief (GEER) Fund, which allocates nearly $3 billion for governors to use at their discretion to support their state’s K-12 and higher education needs related to COVID-19.

The Department of Education announced recently –that the entire $3 billion in the GEER Fund will be made available immediately. Florida’s $$173,585,880 mil-lion allotment can be used to meet a wide range of educational needs, including helping K-12 schools provide online learning, helping colleges and universities fill funding shortfalls, and providing direct assistance to child-care providers.

“The vast majority of public-school students in District 24 come from low-income households, so this economic assistance is a god-send. It will boost distance learning initiatives and our efforts to meet students’ needs, from technology to meals, which will continue throughout the summer,” said Congresswoman Wilson, who is a senior member of the House Education and Labor Committee. “And, I will continue to push for re-sources so that our children are not left behind during this unprecedented period.”

The Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund is part of the new Education Stabilization Fund created by the CARES Act, which also includes the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund and the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, totaling $30.75 billion for education resources.
