Fort Lauderdale, Florida-Zeta Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated ® awards scholarships and book awards to deserving students throughout Broward County who excelled in academics, leadership, and volunteer services. Although 2021 presented some obstacles due to Covid-19, the students succeeded “against all odds.”
The Broward County community has supported us with financial donations and in-kind contributions which enabled us to award scholarships to deserving students. This year was no exception! Through your kind generosity, we were able to award scholarships and book awards to students matriculating in over 15 high schools and technical institutions throughout Broward County. Applications were also sent to high school seniors who participated in our Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Signature Program CAP® (College Admissions Process). Scholarships and book awards were given based on additional criteria of attendance and participation in the CAP® program.
We awarded a total of 30 scholarships from our CAP® and General Scholarship funds. The scholarships and book awards totaled over $30,000. The total included a $500 President Award from President Rosalind Osgood and two Chapter Members who donated matching Memorial Scholarship funds to six Heritage Recipients in memory of their mother, Vivian Cook Satterwhite.
The culminating event was our Annual Scholarship Sip, which was held Virtually on Zoom and Facebook Live. Two 2020 Scholarship recipients expressed “words of wisdom” and shared their first-year college experience during the pandemic. The Scholarship Sip was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The adage, “A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste” still holds true – even in a pandemic and “Against All Odds: We Succeeded.”
