Check on those who hustle – our mental, physical and spiritual health matters too

On The Scene With Crystal Chanel

As I sit down to type this edition of On The Scene, my friend and mentor, Michael Stephens, CEO of Topp Cuttaz, a barbershop, salon and spa franchise consisting of three Miami locations texts. “When are you going to slow down?” Truth be told, ideas of slowing down, taking it easy, and putting yourself first is a constant desire and conversation amongst solo practitioners, small business owners and influencers. While the demand to be everywhere and do everything is ever present, achieving work – life – balance should be our priority. To illustrate this point further, in a Forbes.com article, “Alex Chaidaroglou, CEO and cofounder of Altosight LTD, said, ‘We are doing a dis-service to our clients, team and product if we burn out.’ And Sid Bharath of Thinkific shared, “We don’t realize that the more we work, the higher the chances of us running out of creative ideas and burning out.” And for these reasons alone, I have starting detoxing, working out and making time to enjoy my own company and thoughts.
BECAUSE MY DIET MATTERS: I am the busy entrepreneur that typically eats out daily, grabs meals between stops and orders UberEats for dinner. I thought I was making healthy selections by ordering salads or grilled chicken but when the scale surpassed 200 pounds, I knew I had to make changes. My energy was low, and my physical appearance was embarrassing. Thankfully, I was referred to personal trainer and fitness guru Taina Dorce who shared with a eating regime with me called The Program By Ty. The Program is a strict diet consisting of natural foods with a high focus on raw vegetables. Within days, my energy levels increased, and I dropped more than 10 pounds in water weight. I am still on the program because improvements in my physical appearance is the talk amongst my peers and colleagues. I highly recommend that entrepreneurs consult a professional to truly become more aware of their diet, food schedule and snack intake.
OUR EXERCISE ROUTINES MATTER: Truth be told, I am losing weight and inches because I changed my diet, not because I started working out. I work out because according to entrepreneur.com, “exercise is the one thing that successful entrepreneurs do every day.” Exercise is directly related to productivity as it ‘1) gives you more energy, 2) boosts your mood, 3) acts as a stress management tool and 4) according to scientific studies, it sharpens your cognition.’ Exercise allows you an opportunity to focus on yourself and to take care of yourself. This can be challenging for entrepreneurs, but it is vital to achieving high levels of success.
YOUR TIME ALONE MATTERS: I know the Bible says that man was not designed to be alone, but silence and solitude can is empowering. Start-ups.com addresses how busy 4th quarter can be for entrepreneurs by saying “The end of the calendar year is an extremely busy time for most entrepreneurs and business leaders. From the months of October to December, most of us are busy converting new customers, fulfilling last-minute orders, launching special holiday campaigns and offers, and trying to drive as much business as we can before the new year.” In these moments, we tend to neglect to create moments alone. CEOworld Magazine online details the benefits of alone time in an article entitled: ‘Why it is Important to Spend Some Time Alone as an Entrepreneur.’ In that article, we learn that alone time 1) recharges you mind, body and soul, 2) improves concentration and productivity, 3) brilliant ideas and much needed self-reflection happens when we are alone, and 4) ironically, you can improve your relationship with other people by spending time alone.
Personally, I would like to see more events centered around physical, mental and spiritual health empowerment. Everyone is looking for an opportunity when the truth is when we are physically, men-tally and spirituality sound, we attract opportunities. Making time for ourselves increases our sense of self-worth, further develops our relationship building skills and enhances the depths of our creativity. Therefore, let this be a reminder to check on your friends who hustle. In this season, they have likely for-gotten to make time to check on themselves.
