On June 19, the National Civil Rights Museum will virtually join ten leading Black museums and historical institutions from coast to coast for BLKFREEDOM.org to commemorate Juneteenth, the historic day the Emancipation Proclamation was officially enforced, ending enslavement in Texas. As an annual collaboration, and now, a federal holiday, the BlkFreedom Collective has produced a virtual program. In its third year, the group documents a national exploration of the U.S. Constitution in “We The People” through the eyes of historic museums and anthropologists from across the United States.

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts in partnership with the Exceptional Theater Company offers Summer Special Stars 2022, a class in which people with physical and intellectual disabilities explore social skills through the art of theater in a supportive and nurturing environment.

     Broward Health has appointed Judy Frum as CEO of Broward Health Imperial Point. Frum, who most recently served as interim CEO at the hospital, has more than 16 years of healthcare leadership experience in South Florida.

     June is Pride month in the United States. In big cities and small communities, LGBTQ+ people and their friends, families, and allies will celebrate freedom and progress toward full equality. All fair-minded Americans can celebrate that progress. But there is a growing shadow over this year’s celebrations. The far-right political movement is aggressively trying to turn back the clock to a time when LGBTQ+ people were not treated equally under the law. Anti-equality legal groups and anti-equality politicians are pushing legal and political attacks on our most vulnerable young people. MAGA movement political operatives are trying to win elections by stirring up fear and hatred against LGBTQ+ people.

     Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), issued the following statement on the executive order on policing signed at the White House today in the presence of George Floyd’s family.

       In a crowded race with six candidates vying for the district five school board seat, the president of the Fort Lauderdale chapter of the NAACP, Marsha Ellison, was not gun shy in bringing them all forward to spell out their platforms and answer some very tough questions around critical race theory, the controversial PROMISE program, Don’t Say Gay legislation, and whether they support the Referendum that the Broward School Board will  placed before voters this August.

Congresswoman Val Demings came out swinging against US Senator Marco Rubio igniting crowds at a series of South Florida rallies. At the Little Haiti Cultural Center, the former Orlando police chief talked about the failure of Republicans like Rubio to protect and serve.  Demings pointed to the massacre of 19 Texas elementary school children as a consequence of the Senate Republicans blocking legislation dealing with the disturbing waves of gun violence.  

Today, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and its Media and Telecommunications Task Force have responded with a 12-page letter outlining what the agency could do to help prevent and eliminate digital discrimination.
