       There’s a saying we’ve all heard, and it goes like this: “All politics are local.” But if that’s true, then we need to take a long, hard look at what’s going on right here at home. While the national headlines scream about the rise of authoritarianism, the erosion of truth, and the brazen glorification of hate, the real question is: What are we doing about it right here, in our own backyards?

       One of the nation’s oldest civil rights organizations on Thursday declared a “state of emergency” for antidiscrimination policies, personal freedoms and Black economic advancement in response to President Donald Trump ‘s upending of civil rights precedents and the federal agencies traditionally tasked with enforcing them.

Merriam-Webster defines a house of cards as “a structure or situation that is unstable and likely to collapse.” That’s exactly what democracy becomes when its core institutions are undermined.
