     National and state laws set some guardrails for our elections, but elections are managed locally. That means that elections are run by our friends and neighbors. Thousands of veterans and members of military families are working at polling stations, as are nurses, retirees, small business owners and others. “We the People” indeed.

     Over the years, as national leaders and members of the public recognized the drawbacks of an anarchic world, they turned toward developing institutions of global governance, including international law, a League of Nations, and eventually the United Nations. International security, they believed, would help to maintain national security.

     In an interview at Democracy Now, Anthony Lowenstein, author of The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World, referred to the phenomenon as a “global Palestine.” That is to say, the Israeli genocide of Palestinians and its current bombing of Lebanon – possibly the beginning of a devastating war in the Middle East – is just the most egregious example of the planet’s evolving colonialism in the present moment.

    American country musician Kris Kristofferson was a military veteran and anti-war activist. He continued his advocacy against the Gulf Wars and benefit concerts for Palestinian children despite the negative impacts that both had on his career. Kristofferson died on September 28 at his home in Hawaii, aged 88.

     China’s economy has probably peaked in size and performance. The era of investment and credit expansion seems to be over. As Bloomberg recently reported, factory output has slowed, unemployment has risen, and the stock market has reeled.
