         The Lauderhill Police Department is delighted to announce that Chief of Police Constance Stanley has been selected as the 2024 Honoree for Caribbean American Heritage Month (CAHM) and Culture Awards. This prestigious recognition is a testament to Chief Stanley’s exceptional leadership and commitment to serving our community.

“The Urban League of Broward County is thrilled to announce that its president and CEO, Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, has received the prestigious Harbor Light Excellence Award from the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce. This esteemed recognition is a testament to Dr. Smith-Baugh’s dedicated leadership and tireless commitment to the community. Several members of the Urban League team joined Dr. Smith-Baugh at the award ceremony, celebrating her well-deserved honor and acknowledging her outstanding contributions to the region.

       We are delighted to announce that Dr. Harleen Hutchinson has been selected as the recipient of the esteemed 2024 William M. Schafer, PhD, Award for Excellence in Reflective Supervision Leadership and Inspiration. This distinction marks a milestone as Dr. Hutchinson becomes the first African American to receive this award.

       Jack Daniel’s is undisputedly Kentucky’s best whiskey. It was created by the first Black master Distiller Nathan “Nearest” Green. This is a true but rarely shared vignette of American history. “I don’t think it was ever a conscious decision” to leave the Greens out of the company’s story,” Phil Epps, the global brand director at Brown-Forman, told The New York Times in a 2016 interview. The Brown-Forman Corporation has owned the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee since 1956. Nathan’s obscurity was a side effect of the post Civil War “Jim Crow” marketing. History shows that including a Black man in the story would have been deleterious to profit.

        A nine-year-old Black girl from D.C. recently won big at the Junior Olympics in Kansas.

       The Urban League’s Summer Job Fair, took place this past weekend was a huge success, connecting nearly 500 job seekers with over 40 companies. The event aimed to provide a platform for individuals to find employment opportunities and equip them with the necessary tools to succeed in their job search.
