On Friday, April 7, 2023, Old Town Untapped presents one of the premier harmonica players in the country, Rockin’ Jake, playing live and lively at one Pompano Beach’s best outdoor concert spaces. Stop by Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCa) to meet this month’s featured artist in residence, stellar dancer/choreographer Shanna Woods, and attend the opening of a multi-artist exhibition curated and installed by ArtsUnited, one of the most renowned LGBTQ arts organizations in Florida. Enjoy craft beer, delicious food, and explore the many vendors selling unique and artistic merchandise. Old Town Untapped takes place on the first Friday of the month from 6 – 10 p.m. and is free for all ages to attend.

The groundwork for the rebirth of the program at Florida’s oldest HBCU actually was laid in May of 2021 when officials from THE PLAYERS Championship went to EWU’s Jacksonville campus to announce a $50,000 donation from the tournament.

     Governor Ron Desantis professes that Florida is where woke goes to die.  He is adamant. He is passing laws to ensure that courses such as AP Black American History are not taught in schools and teachers who teach kindergarteners all the way through to college graduate students face harsh consequences for teaching anything dealing with a semblance of diversity, equity, inclusion, white privilege, white fragility or critical race theory (CRT).

     Six University of Florida students at two colleges have been arrested on multiple charges for protesting Florida’s draconian laws that are the tip of rising fascism in the United States . The arrests, in a few days of each other, were made first at University of South Florida at the university’s administration building where President Rhea Law’s office is located.  Placards were carried and demands on flyers that called on Governor Ron DeSantis to stop his repressive regime news and encouragement he is spreading nationwide.

     Both entities have survived and overcome what appeared sometimes as insurmountable odds and yet they both survived and are thriving. Recognizing the historical complexities of the individuals asserted to and who constructed doors of hope-for each did the impossible. They spoke out on behalf of the downtrodden, disenfranchised, and those who labored beneath the sting of a purposeful and manifested whip.

Dorsey Miller IV, Pompano Beach High School Senior, recently got the opportunity of a lifetime when he was accepted into the Disney Dreamers Academy, a four-day program in which high schoolers make professional connections that will change their futures for the better.
