      Just a few days after Tyre Nichols died from injuries inflicted by Memphis police, a man named Darryl Tyree Williams also had a fatal run-in with the cops over in Raleigh, NC. According to CNN, six police officers have been put on administrative leave after tasing Williams multiple times, leading to his death.

     On behalf of the Sistrunk Historical Organization, we are pleased to announce that the following Broward County leaders will serve as notable Grand Marshals for the “2023” Sistrunk Parade/ Festival. Our Sistrunk Historical Pioneers Grand Marshals are Coaches Arthur Kennedy, Jr.  and Johnny Alexander. The Education Grand Marshal is Mr. Torey Alston and the Community Grand Marshal is Mr.  Brian Johnson with our Civic Grand Marshal former State Representative  Mr. Bobby DuBose.

A charitable foundation on Friday named a canopy at a Memphis park for Tyre Nichols, who died last month after he was brutally beaten by officers in a case that has intensified calls for police reform and led to emotional tributes in this Mississippi River city and around the country.

Broward Health hosted its first State of the System address on Monday, January 23, at the Broward Center for Performing Arts, highlighting the system’s 85-year legacy. More than 500 guests, including elected officials, business leaders and healthcare industry leaders from around the tri-county region were present to hear Broward Health leadership provide updates on the system’s current and future initiatives.

     At the end of the 19th century, my maternal great-great-grandfather, who had been born into slavery, helped build a political party called the Readjusters that took control of the state of Virginia. Here’s what got my attention – it was a multi-racial populist party led by a former Confederate general and a freedman that was pro-workers’ rights, pro-civil rights, pro-voting rights, and pro-public education.

     Through this program we annually acknowledge and recognize Black Greek lettered organizations for their numerous contributions and accomplishments. Each year we select a member of one of the fraternities or sororities to serve as the keynote speaker for this occasion. This year, Reverend Cyril Guerra, representing our featured organization – The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. – has been invited to proclaim the word for this the 29th Greek Unity Day observance at Mt. Hermon, Fort Lauderdale.
