Action for Literacy Day will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the park at 1450 W. Sunrise Blvd. and include reading-oriented games, arts and crafts and a special scavenger hunt that will have participants chasing clues all over the park. The event is aimed at children in grades three and under.

Over the years, this event has featured celebrity chefs with a star-studded line up of personalities and dishes. It has also raised $31.8 million for the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at FIU which graduates more undergraduate Black, Hispanic and international students than any other hospitality school in the country.
Single mothers hold an extremely respected role in society. They work hard to provide for their child or children and show their strength every day. Several icons, celebrities, and role models come from single-parent homes. But even with the amount of respect and gratitude single mothers receive, no parent can escape criticism. Certain parental issues specifically affect the children of single parents and a large number of problems within these households go unnoticed and un-talked about.

In celebration of Black History Month, History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “60 Years of Black Art,” a fine art exhibit featuring works for show and sale from Dillard Center for the Arts’ Advanced Placement (AP) students, from February 1 – 28. The exhibit, curated by instructor Celestin Joseph, represents historical and contemporary themes of equality from the perspective of students at the very school that was instrumental in overturning segregation laws in the City of Fort Lauderdale 51 years ago. The exhibit will be open to the public at the New River Inn building of History Fort Lauderdale and will be accessible as a digital experience on History Fort Lauderdale’s YouTube channel.
