When Four-time breast cancer survivor Karen Jackson was first diagnosed with breast cancer, she had no experience nor knowledge of the disease. Jackson felt alone and knew the importance of having people around during this difficult time. That was the reasoning behind her founding Sisters Network Inc. in 1994. And it’s why she’s detailing her journey in a new book, In the Company of My Sisters: My Story, My Truth.

     Jackson’s new book speaks about her life dedicated to assisting other breast cancer survivors. She talked with the Defender about the book, Sisters Network Inc., and her motto in life.

November 2020 – The National Kidney Foundation of Florida (NKFF) is excited announce the first ever “Virtual” Kidney Walk – a new way to walk in support of kidney disease patients from the comfort of your home, neighborhood, or local park. The Fort Lauderdale Kidney Walk will commence with a LIVE opening ceremony on Sunday, November 15th at 8:30 a.m. via Zoom and live streaming on NKFF Facebook page.

The City of Pompano Beach is proud to be Uniting the Community for the holidays with a spectacular virtual celebration, Light Up Pompano Beach, featuring musical and dance performances, lighting displays and fireworks. 

     “I am pleased to join 36 states and over 150 cities in instituting “Ban the Box,” a policy that will give a second chance to returning citizens who are simply trying to support themselves and their families,” Commission Gelin said, after the Tamarac Commission passed the initiative unanimously on his motion.

       Last week, Friday, an incident took place in Texas. Presidential candidate Joe Biden’s campaign bus was traveling from San Antonio to Austin to urge voters to vote for Biden and cast their ballots. People in vehicles that were Trump supporters yelled  vulgar slurs and blocked Biden’s bus and his escorts.

       This being my first year in high school, I wanted to try something new with my extracurricular activities.   In middle school, I was introduced to the flute, track and field, and soccer, but I never quite got a grip on it. So this year in high school, I decided to test out an engineering class.

     “Multicultural communities are being hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic both financially and culturally,” said Beth McDonnell, U.S. Bank Chief Marketing Officer. “Our responsibility is to actively assist multicultural consumers and communities as they recover and rebuild their financial lives for the near and long term. This campaign is just one way we are focused on reaching these communities.”
