The Celebrated Central District, under the astute, visionary leadership of Presiding Elder Rev. Henry E. Green, Jr., held its annual Lay Scholar fundraiser at the Signature Grand in Davie, Florida on Saturday, March 11, 2023. The Central District, composed of some 20 AME churches, engaged in a friendly but important scholarship fundraiser competition to assist district students seeking  higher education opportunities.

Lately I’ve been acutely aware of , at least in thought, Dr. Herman Allen whom for so very long I only knew from a distance even though we share some commonalities.  I recalled running into Brother Vince Jones who was dutifully patrolling the parking lot Sunday two weeks prior, and I mentioned to him that I wanted to write an article about Brother Allen. I even invited him to join us perhaps for a sit down over breakfast. Time passed quickly and I still hadn’t acted on my instinct.

     Kaleb McMichen, a spokesperson for House Speaker Jon Burns, said Naghise died Wednesday. Naghise died at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, where she had been hospitalized for several days, said Wan Smith, a friend and former coworker. No cause of death was given.

“Reverend James was a brilliant civic leader and pastor,” said Rev. Ronald E. Jones, a former Garland, Texas mayor who, like Rev. James, pastored at New Hope. “He was a giant as a pastor and a giant as a leader and human being.”
