The Downbeats at Sunset series is set to continue on Thursday, April 3, 2025, with an enriching evening of community-focused entertainment. Hosted at the Destination Sistrunk Cultural Center, this free event will feature the premiere of a short film, live music, and interactive art activities designed to inspire and empower attendees. Neighbors, families, and friends are invited to come together from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM to celebrate local culture, network with one another, and enjoy a night of creativity and connection.

A Part of a Monthly Community Series

Downbeats at Sunset is a recurring monthly series held on the first Thursday of each month, running through July 2025. Each installment of the series aims to uplift and unite the community by showcasing local artistic talent and creating a welcoming space for engagement. The program is presented by the Ken Roland Project in partnership with Destination Sistrunk Cultural Center – a venue that serves as a model for arts and cultural development in Fort Lauderdale’s historically Black neighborhoods . By offering consistent gatherings centered on art, music, and meaningful dialogue, the series fosters community empowerment and ongoing networking opportunities among attendees.

    Film Premiere Highlights Community Initiative

The April 3rd event will be headlined by the premiere of The Talented Ten, a short film that encapsulates the evening’s spirit of empowerment. This film showcase is more than just a screening – it’s part of a broader initiative to celebrate local talent and encourage positive change. The Talented Ten connects to the organizers’ mission of uplifting the community, echoing their commitment to equipping youth with essential life skills and civic awareness . After the screening, special guest speakers (including community leaders and contributors to the film) will engage the audience in a discussion about the film’s themes and the ongoing initiatives it represents. Their insights will help draw connections between the film’s message and real-life efforts to strengthen the community, leaving attendees inspired to get involved.

Live Music and Interactive Art Experiences

In addition to the film premiere, attendees can look forward to live performances and hands-on art activities that make Downbeats at Sunset an immersive experience. Highlights of the evening include:

    • Soulful live music by The Ken Roland Project: The band will perform throughout the night, delivering uplifting tunes that set a positive tone and get the crowd grooving.
    • The Coloring Book Café led by Dr. Lisa: An interactive art corner where participants of all ages can relax and express their creativity through coloring and collaborative artwork.

These activities not only entertain but also encourage attendees to connect with one another – you might find yourself tapping along to the beat or coloring side-by-side with a neighbor, sparking conversations and camaraderie. The blend of music and art is designed to recenter everyone’s focus on creativity and wellness, even inviting audience participation with percussion and rhythm-making to further engage the crowd.
