The Council was formed in August 2023 from a collective, expressed longing for the presence of elder wisdom. In contrast to societal American values that sometimes sideline, diminish and dismiss elders, the council exists to help current and future generations safeguard the most important elements of legacy. For communities of African descent living in America, those elements include dignity, self-determination, freedom, healing, unity, community, and justice. In community, we reconstruct our relationships, restore emotional health and self-governance.
Born May 29, 1934, Mrs. Annie Pearl Hill, continues to be active in her home town of Belle Glade, FL.; Former PBC educator; 1957 BCU and IU Graduate; served on numerous County Boards; now serves the community by delivering meals daily to members of the community who are unable to get out.
In 2023, Congress established Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer, or Summer EBT, a food assistance program for children in families with low income. The program provides each eligible child a total of $120 (or $40 per month) in grocery assistance during the summer when school is out, to supplement summer meal programs. In 2024, 36 states participated in Summer EBT, including Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Taravella boys and girls track and field teams won the District Championships, with many athletes winning individual district titles including Scary Fils, 1600 meters champion who was apart of the winning 4 x 800 relay with Elijah Vessells, Akeem Beckford, and Ali Mustafa. In addition Fils finished second in the 800 meters, teaming with Vessells, Maleek Lubin, and T’Yquez Jenkins. The 4 x 1 team didn’t fair quite as well, finishing third. Members of that group were Ray Graham, Miles Green, Ja’Michael Barnes, and Quentin Toussaint.
