As the United States stands on the edge of a precipice, staring down the barrel of potential civil strife, it is crucial to reflect on the state of our democracy and the peril it faces. At the center of this storm is a former president who has been convicted of 34 felonies, charged with sexual abuse and defamation of writer E. Jean Carroll and alleged to have incited an insurrection. His actions have sown division and fear, conspiring with our adversaries and seeking to disenfranchise Black and Brown communities. The sheer audacity of this man, who, instead of seeking forgiveness, continues to spread lies and propaganda, even in sacred spaces like Black churches, is an affront to the very essence of our nation’s values.

I wrote this piece many years ago, and today the thought of getting involved with life threatening incidents to save lives seems to be a common constant thought do to the climate of racism, fascism, intolerance and fear. These thoughts are so prevalent. We all may become confronted with this devastating choice. If it comes before you, make sure you are prepared for the outcome either way it goes because it will affect you for the rest of your life. Bobby R. Henry, Sr.
However, in the meantime, I pray for peace, love and understanding and may this Mother’s Day live up to the true expectations of what Mother’s Day means.
Motives are self-expressions that can only truly be proven for the exact reason and purpose of their intent by God; most of the time we do right because our actions are out maneuvered by the wrong reasons to do them.
For several years, Florida, like 26 other states, required a unanimous vote before imposing the death penalty after a conviction for a capital felony. Recently, Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is expected to announce his candidacy for President, signed into law a bill which allows juries to recommend a death sentence with an 8-4 vote. Florida has now become the most extreme death penalty state. Previously, Alabama was the only state which allowed a divided jury to send criminals to death row if 10 of 12 jurors recommend it. As expected, Florida’s change has generated renewed debate about its use of capital punishment.
We have just been inundated with a record setting amount of rain. As with unexpected calamities, there is an abundant amount of destruction and heartaches. As I roamed through the streets of Broward County, especially in the city of Fort Lauderdale, I’ve seen damage, intense emotional stress, with a sense of hopelessness.
Those who hurt children are subject to a punishment that far exceeds anything that you and I or our judicial system could punish them or sentence them to. It appears that we have lost all faith in the hope of accepting, respecting, and living with those who are different than we are. I’m talking about an evil difference; I’m speaking of a fear of an awakening to the realization that life is supposed to be open, just and abiding for all who breathe the same air and walk among God’s creations.
