The Janazah, or Funeral service for Frederick Wilson Sr., born March 28, 1942, was held Monday, June 13, 2022, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Our beloved Frederick, sometimes call Tussel, or Frederick X returned to God on May 31, 2022.
The Massacre of the Buffalo Ten took the lives of innocent people, shattering the lives of their families and the community. The Massacre shed a much-needed national spotlight on the severe neglect of the area, far beyond the fact that there was only one major supermarket in the neighborhood.
It has been 35 years since the first panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt were stitched together, sparking a national movement for action, justice and remembrance for an epidemic that has claimed over 36 million lives around the world.
Samella Lewis, a Black artist and art historian who did more than just decry the racial blinders of the white art establishment, in part by founding a museum dedicated to promoting Black arts, died on May 27 in Torrance, Calif., near Los Angeles. She was 99.
Formed in 2007, Spred the Dub has been building a steady following in South Florida with an intoxicating blend of jazz, soul, funk, reggae, ska and dub. The Miami Herald said, “…their sound is an eclectic mash up of grooves and ‘riddems’ incorporating elements of reggae, jazz, funk, soul and good old rock n’ roll which reflects the cultural melting pot that is their home.” The group has played stages all over the state of Florida, opening for nationally touring acts such as Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Dirty Heads, The Mystic Roots Band, The Movement and reggae legends such as The Skatalites, Eek-A-Mouste, Black Uhuru and Yellowman.
“We are honored to be able to present these renowned authors in conjunction with National LGBTQ+ Pride Month,” said Phyllis Korab, Cultural Affairs Director. “We invite you to join us in our efforts to create and expand opportunities for meaningful and impactful dialogue.”
The investigation will include a comprehensive review of LSP policies, training, supervision, and force investigations, as well as LSP’s systems of accountability, including misconduct complaint intake, investigation, review, disposition, and discipline.
Following an earlier announcement that the show must close the critically acclaimed and reimagined revival of Ntozake Shange’s groundbreaking “for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf,” will now play an additional two weeks.
This animated action film is the brainchild of Lamard Cher-Aime, chief executive officer, Cutting Edge Animation. Mr. Cher-Aime also suffers from major depressive disorder and he is a suicide survivor. Mr. Cher-Aime uses this animated film to destigmatize mental illness, encourage individuals to seek treatment and raise awareness about the greater need for services in the Black community.
